People often ask which School of Rock movie or the school itself is the first. School of Rock was founded in Philadelphia in the late 1990s. It has since grown to be a global brand and a worldwide phenomenon. They operate performance-based music schools all over the world. We were proud to see Dewey Finn (played by Jack Black) embody the same values as every School of Rock location around the globe when the movie hit the big screen years later. Here are five reasons Jack Black’s Dewey Finn would be a great fit at the School of Rock.
1 HE SUPPORTS INCLUSIVITY
Educators are responsible for creating a positive, inclusive, supportive environment for our students. Like Dewey Finn’s Horace Green Prep classroom, students, parents, and staff are open to each other’s differences and united by a love of music. Let’s recall the moment Dewey Finn reminded Tamika that talent is more important than physical appearance. This iconic scene leads us to the next point.
ARETHA IS HER CHOICE AS MUCH AS HE IS OURS
Jack Black’s Dewey Finn said it first in 2003: “You’ve heard about Aretha Franklin, right?” She’s a huge lady. She blows everyone away when she sings. Everybody wants to party with Aretha!” Although we are primarily focused on Rock and Roll, our music education program would not be complete without teaching students that Rock music has roots in all genres. Despite this, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the ‘Queen Of Soul’, a legend for music lovers and musicians alike. It’s possible to say that we party with Aretha quite often.
HE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT ROCK & ROLL
Jack Black’s Dewey Finn, who plays the role of Jack Black in School of Rock, pays tribute to many iconic Rock and Roll bands, including AC/DC Jimi Hendrix and Blondie. Our students can connect with the original rock songs and their lyrics when they perform them live.
HE IS DEDICATED to HIS STUDENTS
Jack Black’s Dewey Finn has more to offer than just a music teacher. He supports them through difficult conversations and challenges, encourages them to be their best selves, reminds them of what they believe in and pushes for them to reach new heights. These are the teachers who bring their 300+ schools to our rehearsal and lesson areas every day. J.B. is a great example of the support system that our community receives at the School of Rock.
HE REMINDS US OF THE ABILITY TO MUSIC BRING US TOGETHER EVEN IN HARD TIMES
Jack Black’s Dewey Finn reminds everyone that music’s true power is its ability to unite people, despite all life’s bumps. Every day, we see students connecting on songs they love, artists they admire, or lyrics that they find inspiring. Students who walk through our doors or enroll in online lessons are offered the opportunity to join a band, make friends with others, and work together towards a greater goal as a team.
