What is an EPK?
An Electronic Press Kit, or EPK for short, is a document that outlines the essence of your band. It should contain clear links to your website, music, and social media. This will allow you to introduce your brand to the world.
When creating an EPK, it is important to consider how the EPK will be viewed from both sides of the fence. Imagine yourself as a manager, promoter or agent. What information would you like to see?
What should you include in your EPK?
Audio links
If you’ve uploaded music to Soundcloud or YouTube, ensure it is listed in your EPK. Agents and promoters (before everything else!) They will want to hear your sound. You should prioritize your latest single if you are an original artist. It would be best if you also remembered that many acts offer a free download in their press kit.
High-resolution Photography
For any EPK, professional photos of your band are vital. Promoters will use the images for poster purposes and entertainment agents’ rosters.
Try to think of something unique when coming up with a photo-shoot concept. Some “Classic” themes work well, such as shots of rock bands looking moody against a graffiti wall. But it is better to come up with something original. This is where a professional photographer can help.
A PNG of your band logo is a great idea that promoters can use to promote an event.
Website and Social Media
Clients and potential managers should have access to additional information on your website. Make sure you include it on your PC. All social media links should be included. Keep them updated! Social media is a great way for agents and promoters to keep track of bands’ popularity and hard work.
Although having many Twitter followers or Facebook likes may seem impressive, it is not the most important thing. It would be best if you had an audience interested in what you post and will likely turn up at your shows. Avoid buying fake likes. A promoter will not be satisfied if a band has 122,000 Facebook likes, but they can’t get 10 people to their local show on Saturday nights.
Biography
Your EPK should have your biography as its main text block. Your band’s accomplishments and shows at notable venues should be listed. You can talk about the bands you’ve supported and any endorsements. Give a general overview of the band and its members.
If you have a press quote, it’s a good idea for a biography to include one. The general advice is to have a short and a long biography. Your EPK should include your longer version.
This section is essential for any fan who wants to learn more about your band. Please check spelling and grammar and have it proofread to ensure it sounds and looks professional.
Testimonials & Press Quotes
Include a selection of quotes from any positive reviews (linking back to the source) if you have them. It is also a good idea to include testimonials from industry figures. It is important to get quotes from past clients if you are a function band.
Videos
High-quality video footage is a great way for function bands and original acts to gain more shows.
This is a promotional video for function bands. A few photos of you performing live with information about your band are the best way to go. However, it is better to be original than traditional. A promo video is essential for any potential entertainment agent.
Storyboarded music videos are great for original acts. However, when it comes down to your EPK, a live performance will be much more useful to any manager or promoter.
